1. Analyze the Competition

  • Review the ad copy, offers, and calls-to-action used by competitors.

  • Study the landing pages linked to their ads.

2. Conduct Keyword Research

  • Use tools like Google Keyword Planner and SEMRush to find keywords with high search volume and relevance.

  • Review the competition level for each keyword to balance between high relevance and manageable cost.

  • Consider long-tail keywords that are more specific and may have lower competition, but higher intent.

3. Consider Keywords’ Search Intent

  • Categorize your target keywords by intent: educational, navigational, commercial, or transactional.

  • Create ad copy that matches the search intent, e.g., informational content for educational intent, strong CTAs for transactional intent.

4. Focus Your Ads

  • Ensure that your landing page reflects the same offer and messaging as your ad.

  • Focus your landing page CTA on a single, clear action.

  • Remove distractions that could divert users from completing the conversion.

5. Pull Search Term Reports Regularly

  • Analyze search term reports weekly to identify low-converting or irrelevant terms.

  • Continuously refine your negative keywords to prevent low-quality clicks and improve ad relevance.

  • Adjust keyword targeting based on the performance of search terms.

  • Use the report insights to refine ad copy and landing pages, increasing ad relevance and Quality Score.

6. Get Rid of Vanity Metrics

  • Track conversions, cost per conversion (CPA), conversion rate, and return on ad spend (ROAS).

  • Monitor smaller actions like sign-ups or time spent on site to understand user engagement.

By following this checklist, you can enhance your Google Ads campaigns, reduce wasted spend, and increase conversions by focusing on strategic actions that align with your business goals.
