Optimizing Paid Ads Without Breaking Budget

What’s the easiest way to increase the number of conversions you get from paid ads?

Easy, just increase the budget, right? WRONG!

It should go without saying, but a higher budget does not always mean more conversions (and more importantly a higher conversion rate).

I recently worked with a client launching in a new geography and is utilizing Google Ads to spread awareness and generate initial leads. After the first three weeks, they asked to increase the budget, because the Ads started slow and they were not seeing the amount of leads they wanted to.

Instead, I took a look at the data and what I found was that impressions were increasing week over week, and so were clicks. Meaning, the Ads were performing well, but the leads were not converting on the landing page.

Due to the nature of the service, the “address” field was included in the lead form. But who wants to fill out your home address on an initial inquiry? So, we removed the address field.

What happened was a beautiful example of Paid Ads optimization. After 5 days, the conversion rate increased 125% (and CPC went down too!).

Main Takeaways:

  • Review your entire customer journey. The Ad content is only a portion of what your prospect is experiencing.

  • Review the data! It will help you understand the underlying issue and not the surface-level issues.

  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with small changes. One field on your form could be keeping you from doubling your leads!
